What Is Military Time?
Military time is the 24-hour clock format used by armed forces, hospitals, emergency services, aviation, transit, and scientists around the world. Instead of resetting at noon and using AM/PM, the day runs continuously from 0000 (midnight) to 2359 (one minute before midnight). It removes any ambiguity about whether 7:00 means morning or evening.
How to Read & Write Military Time
- Four digits, no colon. Write 0830, not 8:30 AM. The first two digits are the hour, the last two are the minutes.
- Midnight is 0000. Some manuals also accept 2400 to mean the very end of the day.
- After noon, add 12. 1:00 PM becomes 1300. 9:00 PM becomes 2100.
- Say it as "hundred" or "hours". 0800 = "zero eight hundred." 1430 = "fourteen thirty hours."
- Add a time zone when it matters. "1430 Zulu" = 14:30 UTC. "1430 Local" = 14:30 in your zone.

Is military time the same as the 24-hour clock?+
Functionally yes. Military time is written without a colon (1430) and often spoken with 'hundred' or 'hours,' but the underlying 24-hour system is identical to what most of the world calls the 24-hour clock.
How do I convert PM to military time?+
Add 12 to the hour. 1:00 PM → 1300. 7:45 PM → 1945. Noon stays 1200. Midnight is 0000.
What is 'Zulu time'?+
Zulu time is the military and aviation name for UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). 1430Z means 14:30 UTC regardless of your local zone.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?+
Both are used. 0000 is the start of a new day; 2400 marks the end of the current day. Most modern systems prefer 0000.
