Visible odds beat hidden odds
The reason this picker calms arguments is that nothing is hidden. Every name is on screen, the highlight touches names all over the grid, and it slows to a stop in plain sight. Compare that with a hat draw, where the list is out of view during the pull. Both are equally fair, but only one of them looks fair to a sceptical nine-year-old, and looking fair is half the job.
Built for the projector
The tiles scale with your list, so eight names fill the wall with big readable type and thirty names still fit without scrolling. It works on a smartboard, a laptop plugged into a TV, or a phone passed around a table. There is no fullscreen requirement and no plugin — just the page.
How the pick is made
The winner is chosen before the animation starts, using your browser's random number generator across the whole list, and the highlight simply travels to it with a decelerating easing curve. That means the flashing sequence cannot be steered by tapping stop early, because there is no stop button to game. Every name has identical odds on every run.
Working through a whole list
Turn on winner removal and the wall shrinks by one tile each round, which is a surprisingly good visual for "we are getting through everybody." Use it for presentation order, reading turns, or drawing raffle prizes. Then hand the floor over with the countdown timer so each turn gets the same length, or try the spinner wheel and claw machine when the room wants a different show.
