Common mistakes to avoid

Most wrong answers from a target heart rate calculation are not arithmetic errors — they are input errors. These are the three that come up most.

  • Treating an estimate as a diagnosis. Population formulas describe averages, and real bodies deviate from averages constantly.
  • Changing units halfway through — pounds and kilograms, inches and centimetres — which is the single most common source of a wildly wrong answer.
  • Re-measuring under different conditions (time of day, hydration, clothing) and then comparing the results as if nothing changed.

How to make it a habit
